« The language, the School and the Nation. Secondary school teachers in Belgium and Italy, 1850-1914 »
My project has for objective to shed light on an aspect of the political and social history of the “educated bourgeoisies” in Europe in the 19th century which is still largely ignored: the role played by literary education in public secondary schools in the construction process of national identity, through the teaching of national languages and the promotion of humanistic culture by the professors. The research will take the form of a compared study of this issue in Belgium and Italy, two countries which were in very comparable situations during the period taken into account (1850-1914). They were indeed two young States confronted with the realities of multilingualism. Relying on a series of studies on Belgian and Italian history, history of teaching in the two countries and history of the “educated bourgeoisies” in Europe, the project is organized around three axes of research. The first one relates to the political and institutional context: progressive development of a public education system in Belgium and Italy, professionalization of the teaching career, evolution of the curriculum in the field of literature. The second axis relates to the role played by the teaching of national languages in the construction process of national identity in the two countries. The third axis relates to the function and figure of literature professors as an intelligentsia promoting humanistic culture
